Can one whole day in the sun cause you to tan?

This summer I'm spending inside as much as possible because 1) i don't want sun damage 2) I don't like tanning. soooo, say i were to spend like 5 or 6 hours in the sun altogether this weekend (for the fourth of july, we'll be out in the sun that long)....is it going to tan me? since it's just one day and i'll be wearing SPF 50 lotion?
